Ithaca is world famous through its legendary King Ulysses. This hero of Homer was renowned for his courage, wisdom, love of the homeland and for a kind of endurance characterizing all Greeks. The adventures of Ulysses are described by Homer in the epic poem “The Odyssey”. Ulysses was away from home for twenty long years, for ten years he had been beseiging Troy and another ten years he spent wandering in unknown lands. He coped with innumerable hardships with courage and determination but never forgot his wish to return to his homeland. Facing many perils on his long journey, he finally saw the day of return to his beloved Ithaca;
