Ithaca History
Ithaca was first inhabited in
4.000 – 3.000 BC – Neolithic civilization, traces of buildings and walls prove that life existed.
3.000 – 2.000 BC - Early Hellenic era.
2.000 – 1500 BC – Pre Mycenaean years, buildings showed life remained primitive.
1.500 – 1.100 BC – Mycenaean period. Ithaca became capital of the Kefalonian states and the Ithacans were characterized as
great explorers.
The famous poems of Homer relate to this time the Odyssey (1184-1174BC) and the Iliad (1193-1184)
1100 – 800 BC – Dorian rule. Ithacas power diminished.
800 – 180 BC – Hellenic period. During these six centuries Ithaca was left to its own devices and independent life continued. In the south the town Alalcomenae was founded.
